Reclaiming overgrown pasture costs a fraction of buying additional acres, and most brushy Missouri pasture recovers well. Under the brush there is usually still a seed bank of fescue and native grasses that comes back once sunlight reaches the ground.
The sequence that works
- Mulch the standing growth. Brush and stems up to about 8 inches are ground to chips in one pass. Cedar is killed outright. Sprouting species such as locust, hedge, persimmon, and sumac will send up shoots from the roots the next season.
- Control the regrowth the following season. The resprouts come back knee-high and thin, and one timed pass with a brush mower or a labeled herbicide kills what took a machine to knock down. Skipping this step is the main reason reclaimed pasture goes back to brush within a few years.
- Reseed where needed. Frost-seeding clover or drilling grass into the recovering ground improves the stand. The extension office or an NRCS grazing specialist can recommend a mix for the soil type, and cost-share sometimes applies (see cedar removal).
- Use the pasture. Regular grazing or haying keeps brush from reestablishing.
Mulching is step 1. The rest is normal landowner or local ag work, and the quote lays out what the property will need.
Per-acre or per-day pricing
Reclamation density varies more than any other job type. Light invasion mulches quickly and usually prices per acre, within the normal $1,500 to $3,000 range. Heavy thicket is slower and sometimes prices better by the machine-day. Both numbers can be quoted when it is close.
Mowing vs. reclaiming
A brush mower maintains ground that is already passable, but it cannot take down a thicket, and mowing heavy brush every year is a recurring cost with no endpoint. One mulching pass plus one follow-up season converts the same acres back to pasture. If a property is recoverable with a mower alone, the quote will say so.
